Interview: Look Who Meditates In The 21st Century
 
Imagine learning meditation from a psychiatrist, whose own meditation teacher trained cosmonauts to meditate in the old Soviet Union...
 
How and when we meditate, is a personal matter, indeed. We know what food we love to eat, the clothes we prefer to wear, or the music we love to listen to, right down to how we enjoy making love; our essential nature is always informing us.
 
Introducing Yelena Palei an expert in beauty therapy and all things beautiful, a make up artist, mother of two adult children who meditate and a loving partner.
 
Arian: How did you initially discover meditation?
 
Yelena: I was introduced to meditation about 11 years ago. My first meditation teacher was a professional psychiatrist in Russia who moved away from treating her patients with medication and instead, taught them how to meditate without the dependency of prescribed drugs.

Cool Science and Labyrinthine Meditation at Harvard Medical School
Brian Knep an artist in residence at Harvard Medical School creates wonderful mandala works from the likes of microscopic transparent worms.  Interacting at free will with colonies of Caenorhabditis elegans, a transparent worm that has about thousand cells and using a technology that has silicone chips, Knep creates tiny mazes and other forms for the worms to interact with. Offering choices about where the worms go, he raise questions about free will, community, and even life and death.

Induce pain relief through meditation
 
For people coping with pain a brief training in mindfulness meditation can help improve pain management. In a recent study that tested meditation's effect on perception of pain, meditation trained participants had less of a response to pain while meditating and even experienced less pain sensitivity when they weren't meditating. Researchers suggest that meditation may help practitioners tune into the present moment rather than dwelling on the negative emotions caused by pain.

For your mind and heart

A study recently presented at the American Heart Association suggests that relaxation is key to coronary artery disease management. Researchers followed about 200 high risk patients for an average of five years. Among the 100 who meditated, there were 20 heart attacks, strokes and deaths. In the comparison group, there were 32.
The meditators tended to remain disease-free longer and reduced their blood pressure significantly.
