August 2009
Hello friend,
Welcome to the August edition of Continuum.
My fiance Alan has returned from filming the longest solar eclipse of the 21st century lasting 6 minutes, in Shanghai, China. Since then, I've watched him rest more frequently. Much to my surprise he has given himself some radical rest - afternoon naps, reading a book that isn't work related, meditation, yoga, casual walks along the beach to view the cloud and sun variation or watch the hive of activity with the many dogs and people at our local park. Believe me when I say Alan's work ethic is strong and embedded. So what's changed?
"Being away allowed me to break the pattern of routine, I want to be a tourist in my own everyday life." he said.
If anything, he is more awake to the world around him because he has put himself in absorption mode. The Tibetan's talk about the absorption prinicple in meditation - whatever your focus is in meditation, let it absorb you completely and utterly, until there is no separation. The Buddha once made a lovely, yet simple statement about absorption and the unity of life:
"I am everything and everyone."
There is no reason why you can't enjoy the flow of life in practical realities; a cup of coffee, driving to work, taking a shower or preparing a meal.
Notice the increased vibrancy when you show up and pay attention to life.
We pay dearly for our lack of attention to what really matters. You don't have to earn it, work it or even wait for it; life is always there waiting for your attention.
So what's it costing you to not take purposeful time out, as you juggle a job, a mortage, a partner, kids, or perhaps, no job, being a single parent or ex-partner? Your Meditation Coaching Space below, elaborates further on why you can't afford not to.
There are spaces still left in our August workshop and 4 week courses for those who need support and freedom in their busy lives.
Keep breathing to be the change you live and, to help you love, in all ways!
Warmest wishes,

Small Gateways Into Calm
What are the things you do when you're tired?
Reach for something sweet, drink your fifth cup of coffee, have another glass of wine or raise your voice at the people you love?
None of these efforts restore energy, most in fact, do the opposite.
For those who are exhausted and burned out, it's no mystery that getting to bed a little earlier would help.

| Interview: Look Who Meditates In The 21st Century |
Meditation is unrivalled. It's a creative, dynamic, powerhouse. It raises energy, reduces tension, it even helps us to respond appropriately and, is a welcome break from the world. Beyond that, it's a universal gateway into the cosmology of life, a time to reside in our hearts and let our spontaneous juices flow in the stream of consciousness - with love and life. We all meditate for different reasons.
How and when we meditate, is a personal matter, indeed. We know what food we love to eat, the clothes we prefer to wear, or the music we love to listen to, right down to how we enjoy making love; our essential nature is always informing us.
Introducing 40+ Isabelle, a Medical Doctor in private practice, who loves to paint on canvas, and is married with two teenagers.
Arian: How did you get started with meditation?
Isabelle: After completing my medical training at university in 1989, I was incapable of doing anything else. Family and friends could not understand why I desperately needed to have a break, but a dear girlfriend saved me from myself and suggested I travel to India with her.
We were persuaded by German travellers to join them at Igatpuri, Marharashtra for a ten day retreat with a man called Goenka.

Artist slows down heart beat to sculpt creations
Willard Wigan's micro sculptures have become so minute, they are only visible through a microscope. Willard who is described as the "eighth wonder of the world" enters a meditative state in which his heartbeat is slowed, allowing him to reduce hand tremors and sculpt between pulse beats.
Mattieu Ricard, move over
Recently Matthieu Ricard's position as "the world's happiest man" has been replaced by another Tibetan monk on the path to wellbeing. According to Daniel Goleman, "How did he get that way? Apparently the same way you get to Carnegie Hall. Practice!"
"Will this seriously upset Mattieu Ricard? If there's one thing you don't want to see, it's the second world's happiest man throwing a chair through a window" remarked a commentator.

Prisioners given meditation training
St Louis Prison and jails in Bonne Terre and Potosi have been given a year round meditation training program, to help them let go of thoughts and gain insight into what the mind reveals when it is quiet.
Prisoners learn impulse control and how to deal with anger.
Prisoner Stan, expressed his transformation this way.
"I spent so long being mean, devising evil, being evil. I was evil. But somewhere I began to change, to want something different. Now I plan good. I spend my days trying to create something positive - not only for myself, but for the other guys around me and even the guards."
And there's John, angry, sullen and serving a sentence of life, without parole. Today he writes for a quarterly magazine, teaches math, co-facilitates the meditation class and organises meditation retreats at the prison.
